IBS is a very difficult problem to deal with, especially since no single cause for it has been isolated. However, proper Eating for IBS is a vital part of any treatment program.

For those of you who are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you don’t need to be told how difficult it is to live with. Many sufferers also suffer from chronic insomnia and other disorders that just add to their misery.

A high fiber diet is an essential part of any Eating for IBS program. Fibers are beneficial for everybody and are helpful whether you experience chronic constipation or diarrhea, each of which are often associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

There are two types of fibers. Soluble fibers are those that dissolve in water and turn into gelatinous substances. They include apples, citrus fruits and beans. Psyllium, too, is a natural vegetable fiber that can be purchased as a dietary supplement. Insoluble fibers are fibers that add bulk to your diet. These include whole grains and a number of vegetables.

You should eliminate as many processed foods from your diet as possible and stick with whole foods. Fast foods and junk foods in particular are usually high in fat and low in fiber, making them the worst possible combination for IBS sufferers.

How and when you eat is another important aspect of an Eating for IBS diet. Stress is a major factor in IBS, so take advantage of any opportunity to relieve stress, especially at meal time. Make it a habit to relax and enjoy your meals. Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. It is better to eat several small meals and snacks per day than to overeat at meal times.

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, but make sure they’re the right fluids. Water is ideal. Keep a bottle of water handy and sip it throughout the day. Coffee and soft drinks should be avoided and in some cases perhaps eliminated altogether.

If you are persistent with your Eating for IBS diet, you will find the key to success. Keep a diary and consult a dietician if possible. At the very least, stick with the basic high fiber, low fat diet long enough to give it a chance to work. Don’t give up! You can get a handle on IBS.

Learning how to eat for IBS can mean the difference between being doubled over in pain for the day or feeling like normal. It’s important that you not only learn how to eat properly but that you have enough discipline to fight your natural temptations.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects millions of people around the world. For some, it creates mild, yet chronic symptoms while for others it can be seriously disturbing and debilitating. There does not seem to be just one cause for this disorder, but the right dietary changes can make a big difference and even alleviate the symptoms altogether.

Healthy eating for IBS relief is perhaps the best medicine. There are general guidelines you should follow as well as specific foods and diets that may be more beneficial to some than to others.

Across the board, dietitians recommend a high fiber diet for IBS sufferers. If you are accustomed to eating highly processed and bleached grains, the first thing you should do is switch to whole grain foods. These include brown rice, whole wheat bread and other breads containing whole grains, muesli or oatmeal and other unprocessed or minimally processed grains.

Instead of eating large meals, spread your meals out throughout the day. Start with a whole grain breakfast such as muesli. Instead of filling up, have a light snack between breakfast and lunch. For lunch, you may want to have a whole grain sandwich. Dinner may consist of lean meat, steamed vegetables and potatoes. Avoid fatty foods and try to relax when you eat and eat slowly.

Aside from this general eating for IBS diet, you may need to pinpoint any foods that worsen your IBS symptoms. Some people are lactose intolerant, for example. If milk and cheese are part of your daily diet and you suffer from chronic IBS, you may want to eliminate all dairy products from your diet for a short time and see if this alleviates your symptoms.

Remember, though, that dairy products are a principle source of calcium, so find a suitable calcium replacement or consult with a dietitian before you embark on this or any other food elimination diet.

It should be emphasized that there is no one single eating for IBS diet that works for everyone. Some diets work wonders for some people and do nothing for others. However, a diet high in fiber and low in fat will be of benefit to anyone. If you are patient and persistent, you can find relief from Irritable Bowel Syndrome through diet.
